Well it’s been a crazy start to 2013. The COC Ensemble has been rehearsing and finally performed our show of La clemenza di Tito on Feb 6th. I sang the role of Publio and all in all I enjoyed being a part of this opera. It challenged my views on this show a little bit but our directer R.B. Schlather was very accommodating in allowing us to make the characters and the show our own. I’ve also had the privilege of working on Tristan und Isolde, covering the Steuermann, but also role studying King Marke. This has been very enlightening as my first real foray into Wagner, and it feels good to sing with one’s whole being and the demand on the body is much different.
Somewhere in the midst of all this, I performed in a concert of Mozart and Salieri works as well. We discovered a few little gems that don’t see the light of day very often. I performed in Mozart’s trio “Mi lagnero tacendo” and an awesome Salieri aria from one of his passions “Qual terribil vendetta… All’idea de tuoi perigli”.
Looking ahead from Tito and Tristan, I’ve started working on Salome, Carmelites and soon Lucia.

John Gilk’s Opera Ramblings
One of the perks of being an understudy is getting to watch the whole rehearsal process. Tonight I watched the third orchestra dress rehearsal of il Trovatore. This was the first time that the show was run top to bottom with orchestra and full staging, but no public audience. There’s something special about a theater full of empty seats, just artists, crew and people close to the production. You can sit wherever you want, get the best view and best sound and its great to watch the piece you’ve been working on for the last month finally get on its feet.
This show has just further enhanced my love of Verdi, both to listen to and to sing. I was hooked from my first listening of the opening scene and thrilled to learn that I would be covering the role of Ferrando, sung by Dmitri Belosselsky. This assignment, maybe more than any other so far has really helped to move me in a new exciting direction.
I’ve been meaning to create a website for a while now, so I’ve decided to take the plunge and do it myself. As I figure out how WordPress works hopefully the website will take one a nice look and have all the pertinent information available.
Also this week the COC Ensemble studio performed at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheater as part of the Free Concert Series. I decided to sing the opening scene from il Trovatore, in which Ferrando recounts the cursing and abduction of the Count’s brother by the Gypsy Witch. It’s something I’ve enjoyed working on and has brought a new dimension to my voice as I figure out how to navigate the music of Verdi. I hope people enjoyed it.
